A mattress bed and bathroom unit in New York has been found to have bed bugs that caused a state of emergency and called for a temporary halt in New Yorkers holiday plans, the New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said.
The agency said it is investigating and will work with the mattress company to determine if any of its units were used in the incident, which occurred on Dec. 21.
In the wake of the outbreak, New Yorkers were forced to take a long, two-day break and were ordered to return to work for a year.
In addition, New York Gov.
Andrew Cuomo said he will ask the state legislature to pass legislation that would ban any public or private business from opening any new business or residential space in New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, Texas and New Mexico to handle the outbreak.
The state also imposed a temporary ban on public workers from working or living with their families or on vacation.
The New York outbreak has resulted in at least 20 deaths and more than 600 infections, according to the department.
In California, a mattress bed has been discovered to have the bugs that killed at least three people and left at least one in a critical condition, the California Department of Public Health said.
On Thursday, New Mexico Gov.
Susana Martinez said the state will impose a statewide curfew from midnight to 6 a.m. and also a curfew from 8 p.m to 6:30 a.k. until further notice for residents of San Juan del Sur, Santa Fe and the Navajo Nation.
In Colorado, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said it will not allow outdoor recreation to be conducted until Dec. 20, the day before New York’s Christmas break, and from Dec. 23 to Dec. 31, for people living in the San Juan Del Sur, San Juan, Denver and Boulder counties.
The department has also said that the public will be allowed to travel only for recreational activities like horseback riding and rafting, but no other activities.
New York State Public Health Commissioner Jennifer Feltman said the company responsible for storing the mattress in question, The New Balance, is not cooperating with authorities in the case.
The company has not responded to requests for comment, and New York state has not provided a date for the suspension of the sale.
New Yorkers who have bought a mattress with the bedbug-resistant coating have been told to immediately report it to the manufacturer, the department said.
A spokesman for The New Yorker said the mattress manufacturer was not providing information to the state because it had not been verified by authorities.
In New York, state lawmakers will vote on a bill next week that would require the installation of bed bug proofing for public buildings and apartment buildings, but it would not apply to businesses, public or privately owned.
Officials in Colorado, which also has a bedbug outbreak, are seeking the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s help in fighting the spread of the virus.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said it has identified five hotels that had bedbug infestations.
In Florida, Gov.
Rick Scott said that a state senator, a family friend and a business owner were the only victims of a bed bug attack in the state, and it is too soon to determine the extent of the disease.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it was working with the state’s Office of Health to determine who is responsible for the attack, which took place at a Miami hotel.
A spokeswoman for the hotel that had the infestation said it notified hotel security on Friday and the infestated hotel was evacuated.
Florida Gov.
Jeb Bush said in a statement that Florida is “ready to move on” with the outbreak and is working to determine where the outbreak originated and what to do about it.
He said the outbreak was brought to the attention of the state by local health officials, and Florida is continuing to work to eliminate the outbreak through prevention and containment.
The outbreak comes as Florida’s Senate races continue to be closely watched.
The Republican-led state Senate is in the midst of a primary election and will be up for re-election in the June 8 election.
